The final instalment in the critically acclaimed Grim Company trilogy.
The Age of Ruin is near complete.
In the far North the Nameless stirs beneath the Spine Mountains and demonspawn push ever southwards; from the West the Fade have returned, vowing to purge the realm of humankind; and an ancient weapon, forged in the Godswar, has once again been unleashed to ravage the land.
Weakened by in-fighting, the surviving Magelords are unable – or unwilling – to use their power to defend humanity. The last spark of hope rests with the surviving members of the Grim Company Davarus Cole, Brodar Kane and Eremul the Halfmage.

I'm a very tolerant reader and always try to give the author the benefit of the doubt. I really like the characters of the Highlanders especially the two leads Kayne and Wolf. The actor has a talent for poignant and well described relationships and vignettes. His description of tough guys feeling deep emotion, loss, fear, sadness is very skillful and welcome. That is why it is such a disappointment what was made of this world and the characters in it in this third book.Scull can be very good but unfortunately he didn't have an editor who could be honest and tell him not to dilute his narrative with hordes of additional characters and races thrown in at the last minute. It completely broke the spell of following the characters and suspension of belief and was a real faux pas. While he is no R. Scott Bakker, this book reminds me of Bakker's last book The Unholy Consult where he takes such a masterpiece of a world and narrative and squanders it with self absorbed dithering.
Really a shame - Kayne is so well portrayed that he deserves better. This trilogy could be salvaged by editing and re-wrtiting this last book. Spoiler: What is it with the latest trend of putting atom bombs in every sword and sorcery book? I've read three in a row where we have to sit through the sudden appearance of space aliens, star ships and atom bombs in our iron age dramas? C'mon. There was the aforementioned Aspect Emperor book, then Prince of Thorns (who actually pulled it off) and now this, the most ham handed attempt. If you like Kayne don't read this, you will be disappointed!

Dead Man Steel The Grim Company Book 3 eBook Luke Scull Reviews
Good character development and plot, interesting story. More for adults than kids unlike a lot of other books in this genre.
Very little needs to be said. If you read the first two novels you know what you are in for. Bloody mayhem and bloodier heroes. A fitting end to a fine series.
Cudo's to this being the Author's first books. I read a ton of this genre and these three books fit my likes better than any I've read. Bloody, fast paced, great characters, and a uniquely imaginative setting. Great work. Thank you.
I really enjoyed reading the majority of this book and thought it was the best of the series. Up to the ending(s), the first was happy, the second was dark, the third was tiresome and by the forth(were there more?) I was fed up. They cost the book two stars and that's a real shame. Recommended but prepare to be disappointed with the finale(s)
The Grim Company is a great, compact story. The characters are enjoyable and rich, and the world is novel (yet not as deeply explored as some others). Will there be more? I think it likely without checking google. But this line of stories is definitely done.
The perceived denouement was a bit rushed, and over quickly (though not a full on deus ex machina), but a second important event messed the whole idea of what would have been an unwelcome happily ever after.
Great job! This is what good writing is about. He is one of my new favorite authors along with Miles Cameron, Elliott James, and Rachel Aaron. I look forward to reading more of his work.
The only pet peeve I had was that the Fehd were both stronger and weaker in ways that I am not sure I liked. I could not decide if I should love them or hate them. I am guessing that means there might be a need for a prequel. Nice move, Luke!
On the whole, this is a treat! Please clear your schedule and gather your snacks before you read this. Trust me; you will not be disappointed.
*MASSIVE SPOILERS*
I am sad to say I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. The previous two (though I have yet to actually rate) I'd give a 4/5 for sheer enjoyment and escapism. They aren't "great" books but they are fun, this one however (while still fun) creates unexplained lapses and gaps in how the characters act and engage. Here are some of the small examples
Jerek - He goes from swearing to kill Kayne to being his loyal partner without a word said, now while I understand Jerek is indeed a loyal strong heart and a quiet man... he is not the sort (from what we were SHOWN) to just ignore the fact that Kayne lied to him about the circumstances of his death. Now, while I believe Jerek WOULD embrace Kayne again, I do not believe the way it was shown to us made ANY sense.
Half-Mage - I'm honestly half uncertain as to his point of view chapters in this book since all they amounted to was him sacrificing himself. They added NOTHING that the first book didn't tell us. Frankly he should have sacrificed himself much earlier on, because otherwise all his chapters were was in essence a form of torture - to the reader. Seeing him brutally mistreated STILL again, and again, and again. I just ... didn't want to see that, and it helped nothing.
Saverian - Why? He was given absolutely 0 background and we have no real understanding of his motives or principles. He, a character who we spent almost NO time with, ended up killing 90% of the main characters of the trilogy... in an anticlimactic sneak attack in the last 5 minutes of the book. Cool... just you know, make the entirety of the series essentially nonsensical in the last minute why don't you? I kind of just sat there in shock going "WHY?" not because I was upset that characters I kind of liked died, but because I really truly didn't understand what it was suppose to add to the entire experience.
Thanates/Cole/White Lady/Kanye/Magnar/Rana/Jana - none of these characters truly got any development, every time it looked like Cole would mature you slide him back a pace. I truly couldn't understand that. You tried to say he evolved ... because he didn't brag? He stilled bragged all the time. You can't just mention "change" from another character's point of view if you don't actually show it to the reader... because you didn't. He was the same Cole from start to finish of this series, he just got some upgraded power boosts.
Sasha - To my real point. You screwed up here. I'm not going to tell you Luke who Sasha should be, or what her sexuality should be... but I will say to me, it seemed like you didn't want to end the book on a happy note of ANY sort in a sort of rebellious action to drum up sales or a sense of yourself as a risque author. It didn't work. Instead you turned her into a "lesbian" at the drop of the hat despite absolutely 0 inclination EVER BEFORE that she felt this way about women. Can I understand her not wanting to be with a man at all? yes, and in fact due to her experiences that makes a LOT more sense then making her simply prefer women. You undercut not just her character, but yourself in a massive way with this abrupt entry. Frankly, the other aspects could even be ignored to a certain extent but when you ripped this out in the last scene I laughed. I laughed, and I kept laughing. As a member of the LGBTQ community (i'm pansexual) I couldn't help but think "this is honestly what straight white males think makes sense?"
Overall your books are good, but not great. This one on the other hand is merely "okay".
